Study progress
1. Concept
A/AN are indefinite articles used mainly with singular countable nouns when the listener does not know exactly which person or thing is meant. THE is the definite article used for a particular or already identified person or thing.
2. A vs AN
- A before a consonant sound: a book, a university (/juː/).
- AN before a vowel sound: an apple, an hour (silent h).
Choose by sound, not merely by the first letter.
3. Uses of THE
Use the for something already mentioned, unique things, superlatives, ordinal numbers, many geographical names, and specific nouns: the sun, the best, the first, the Ganges.
4. Common Exam Traps
- a European (starts with /juː/)
- an honest man (silent h)
- the Himalayas, but Mount Everest
- go to school (institutional use) vs go to the school (specific building)
5. Quick Practice Method
First identify the noun. Ask: Is it singular countable? Is it specific? Then listen to the first sound. This avoids most article questions.
Memory Tricks & Quick Recall
A/AN = SOUND. THE = SPECIFIC. Think: “Sound decides A/AN; identity decides THE.”
